In 1969, the idea for a local radio station arose, inspired by the efforts of Auckland’s Radio Hauraki pirates. After obtaining a broadcasting license on November 10th, 1970, Radio Whakatane Limited was born. The call-sign, 1XX, reflects its North Island location and private ownership. With its unique double letter designation, 1XX became the voice of the Eastern Bay of Plenty. Broadcasting began on June 30th, 1971, with an explosive on-air debut by Broadcasting Minister H.J. Walker. Now, the Eastern Bay of Plenty had its very own voice.
