In 1969, the idea for a local radio station arose, inspired by the efforts of Auckland’s Radio Hauraki pirates. After obtaining a broadcasting license on November 10th, 1970, Radio Whakatane Limited was born. The call-sign, 1XX, reflects its North Island location and private ownership.
